Victoria is the second largest part of this site. Melbourne is easier to cross than Sydney and much longer end to end, which changes what a sensible search radius looks like.
Melbourne is kinder to a dater than Sydney is. The grid works, the trams go where you need them, and there is no harbour splitting the city in half. What it has instead is length. From Brunswick to Frankston is about 50 kilometres and roughly an hour and a quarter on a bad evening. From Werribee to Ringwood is worse.
So the useful radius here is wider than in Sydney but it still is not the whole city. Most people will comfortably cover their own third of Melbourne, and will cross to another third for somebody they have already had a proper conversation with.
The inner north. Brunswick, Coburg, Fitzroy, Northcote, Preston. Trams down Sydney Road and Smith Street, quiet cafes on every second corner, and the easiest part of Melbourne to arrange a first coffee in at short notice.
The inner east. Richmond, Hawthorn, Camberwell, out to Box Hill. Well served by trains and the most straightforward part of the city for somebody coming in from the outer east.
The west. Footscray, Yarraville, Sunshine, Werribee. Growing fast and often ignored by anybody writing about Melbourne from Fitzroy. Footscray is 15 minutes from the city by train and has as good a choice of places to sit down as anywhere.
The bay. Port Melbourne, St Kilda, Brighton, down through Mordialloc to Frankston. A pleasant place to walk and talk, which makes it a good first meeting, and a very long strip. Frankston to St Kilda is 40 kilometres and it feels it.
The Mornington Peninsula. Mornington, Rosebud, Sorrento. Effectively separate from Melbourne for dating purposes, and lovely once you are there. Somebody in the inner north is not coming down for a coffee, so this is a case for meeting halfway or for making a day of it rather than an hour.
Geelong is 75 kilometres from the city and the train makes it far more workable than the distance suggests, particularly if you meet at the Melbourne end or in Werribee between the two. Ballarat and Bendigo have members in smaller numbers, and both are better served by picking a town between the two of you than by one person doing the whole trip.
Melbourne makes this easy. A coffee mid morning somewhere on a tram line, or a walk along the bay if the weather is behaving. Pick somewhere quiet enough to hear each other, which rules out most of Chapel Street on a Saturday. If one of you is coming a long way, the one who travels less buys the coffee.
Victoria is the second largest part of this site. The mature dating near you page covers how far people here travel to meet.
Sydney and New South Wales is the largest part of the site and Brisbane and South East Queensland the third. Our safety page covers the two things that go wrong most often, and pricing sets out what messaging costs.
Further than in Sydney, because the grid and the freeways make it easier, but the bay and the length of the city still set limits. Brunswick to Frankston is not a weeknight trip in either direction.
Sydney Road, Smith Street, the strips along the bay at Port Melbourne and Brighton, and the centres at Footscray, Box Hill and Frankston. Trams and the train lines decide most of it.
Yes, around Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo in smaller numbers. Geelong to Melbourne is manageable by train, and the others are better served by meeting somewhere in between.
