New South Wales is where most people on this site live, and Sydney is the hardest Australian city to date across. This page is about the geography rather than the promises.
Sydney is not one dating market. It is several, separated by water and by a motorway system that decides how your evening goes. Mosman to Newtown is 12 kilometres on a map and can be the better part of an hour at six o'clock on a Wednesday. Cronulla to Manly is a different world entirely, whatever the map says.
The practical consequence is that a wide search radius in Sydney produces conversations that never turn into meetings. It is better to search a genuinely local area properly than to search the whole basin and hope somebody will drive.
The inner west. Newtown, Marrickville, Leichhardt, Ashfield. Good transport, plenty of quiet places for a coffee, and people here will generally come to you from the city or the eastern suburbs without complaint.
The eastern suburbs. Bondi, Randwick, Coogee, down to Maroubra. Easy to reach from the city and the inner west, awkward from anywhere north of the bridge, and parking is its own conversation.
The northern beaches. Manly, Dee Why, Narrabeen. Lovely and effectively a separate town for dating purposes. Somebody from Parramatta is not doing this on a weeknight and it is fairer to say so early than to discover it after a fortnight.
The north shore. Chatswood, Lane Cove, Hornsby. The train line does a lot of the work here and it is the one part of the north that connects properly to the city.
Parramatta and the greater west. Parramatta, Blacktown, Penrith, Liverpool. This is a very large share of Sydney and it is the part that gets least attention from dating sites written by people who live in Bondi. If you are out here, search locally first. Parramatta has everything a first meeting needs and it is a great deal easier for two western Sydney people than a trip into the city for both.
It is worth treating it as one rather than as a detail. If you are talking to someone on the other side of the harbour and it is going well, say plainly that you are happy to make the trip, and pick a time that is not the middle of the peak. Most people will do it once. Expecting it weekly is what ends things.
There are members up the coast towards Newcastle and the Hunter, south through the Illawarra towards Wollongong, and out towards the Blue Mountains and beyond. Distances are real. Meeting in a town between the two of you is usually the fairest arrangement and it removes the question of whose suburb it happens in.

Less than the map suggests. The harbour and the M4 corridor turn short distances into long trips on a weeknight, and most people will cross the bridge once for someone they have already spoken to properly.
Somewhere with parking or a station near it. Newtown, Manly, Cronulla, Parramatta and the small strips along the north shore all work. Somewhere quiet enough to hear each other matters more than somewhere impressive.
There are members in the Central Coast, the Illawarra, the Hunter and further out, in smaller numbers. Meeting halfway in a town between the two of you is usually the sensible arrangement.
